Listening Room # 18 City Art Cologne / Stockhausen at Kompakt (Series Territories imaginary)

For this 18 th Listening Room, we have clearly preferred option psychogeographic. I wanted this afternoon, around a brunch to honor a city that has a certain fascination for me, I just fascinating to clearly define the contours. Submit this room listening part of this desire to understand but also to share. Some attendees have already gone this afternoon in Cologne (with or without my lights).
This fascination has developed into a more general attraction to the towns. Glasgow, Alicante, Valladolid, Liege joined Cologne in my personal pantheon (Sorry now it will be a little more selfish than usual), and each of them, a vision-the-world develops. Trips are set up.

Cologne, city of art. First, to a certain lifestyle. Next to its museums. And finally, for its historical status as capital of electronic music.
The art of living. Cologne I discovered during a brief stay of 30 hours for a festival of improvised electro-acoustic music (see below). 30 hours of madness, like a shot of Cologne intravenously. Cologne deflowered me. And I will never find her now almost virginal. Some time after, we were looking, Ingrid and me, a place to spend a few days in love. When, for lack of anything better, I proposed Cologne, Ingrid looked at me, skeptical as if I asked her to spend the weekend eating bratwurst saying Ich liebe dich with tenderness Teutonic. However, once there, a few hours, she was conquered. And since we returned a couple of times (with friends, children, couples, single, etc.).
Cologne is a city quite ugly (because 95% destroyed during the war) and quite small. But if one ignores the first sense, we find a very charming city, a city where the art of living beyond interiors to settle on sidewalks. A taste of city, where art to citizenship.
museums. The Ludwig Museum is a very beautiful, but whose beauty is given in bits. This is not one of these museums flashy we just see the end of the world (and which ultimately we retain only the envelope designed by a renowned architect). It is like a maze, dominated by the Dom (cathedral that will always remain for Elina, our 6 year old daughter, the house of Spiderman because she has seen before-a mime who officiated to the delight of tourists) and houses a very fine collection which changes regularly.
electronic music. Stockhausen, we talked about it in the invitation and we will listen later. Kompakt, especially. During my 30 hours founding in Cologne, I let myself be captured by a group of three young French people in the cave of Kompakt, Studio 672 that was home for many years the evening TOTAL CONFUSION (showcase the sound of Kompakt ( which we also hear one or the other examples). Kompakt sound, so unique, has walked in my mind and my dance steps have been irreparably footprint.
A-Muzik is the best record store in the world ... (but I say it often).
Thank you once again, present. Good listening and goodbye.
Thanks to Marc for the hospitality and all the good things ...

Tracklist

1/Karlheinz Stockhausen "-Helikopter String Quartet (excerpt) (performed by the Arditti String Quartet) (Naive Montaigne) This quartet is a project a little crazy (just say megalomaniac bad language) of the master of contemporary music. He is recording a string quartet inside a helicopter taking off. Floor columns of speakers and monitors the public realize the progression (but also spatial sound) of giant insect and its occupants. Born in 1928 in
Mödrath (near Cologne), he died in 2007. In 1950, he participated in the creation of the WDR (Westdeutscher Rundfunk) which he led from 1962. In 1953 he composed his first electronic piece (and thus creates a new genre-which serves to justify my assertion of what the invitation as Cologne is the historic capital of electronic music). (Sources: Wikipedia and notes of the CD)

2/Ulf Lohmann "Because-Thomas/Mayer remix '(Kompakt) One finds this beautiful variation of Ulf Lohmann Because on Kompakt 100, Kompakt label the disc, which celebrates the centenary booklet of the venerable institution. The original version is quite different (and I invite you to watch the clip on youtube) much more "ambient". The character is mysterious and I can not tell you much. This piece is typical of his Cologne (and Kompakt): hypnotic, not too fast. The refrain is quick to grab your attention.

3/Reuber "Ruhig blut" (Staubgold) Here is an excerpt from the second solo album from Timo Reuber (which is itself half of the duo Klangwart). Staubgold, those who come often begin to know: Staubgold is one of my favorite labels. This is the baby of Markus Detmers. Based first in Cologne, he then migrated to land more comprehensive (and presumably more profitable): Berlin. Nonetheless, Markus are loyal to those with which it started. The site tells us that means Ruhig blut Keep cool and I take this term as the Cologne motorcycle. This town forgets to take over the head. This disc speaks "to swing between the poles, between city and countryside, between work and leisure, between the beat and ambient . I offer an excerpt of this long range 22 minutes sounds like a solo electronic

4/Gas jalopy ... "Untitled" (Mille Plateaux) The title of this piece says nothing. To find meaning, we must refer to the album from which it is derived is: Königsforst. This vast forest is located near Cologne, on the other side of the Rhine. You cross a bridge spanning the mythical river. You spend the districts of Deutz and Kalk and you enter the forest mythical Königsforst. This album is a tribute to Wolfgang Voigt to the forest. We are clearly in psychogeography because the music says something else than just a symphony pastoral: a metronomic bass, a synth and a few guitar chords. The magic in this simplicity. With his brother Reinhard, they have produced some of the finest electronic music, the better they have helped create the legendary Kompakt label which has reissued all records of Gas. The crazier is that I'm not gone yet to explore this famous forest.
5/Schwabinggrad Ballet "Moderne Welt" (Staubgold) This course is an intruder. They are from Hamburg. But they are greeted by Markus Staubgold and I like to program them. Staubgold's website can find the following info: The Ballet Schwabinggrad was founded in 2000 at a camp of anti-racist group No Border. The group has developed a flexible strategy for its performance. They want to create confusion, breaking the old forms, and re-politicize (sic). The Schwabinggrad Ballet (whose name combines the memory of the worst Nazi defeat and the first riot of innocent gypsy street musicians of Germany) is a loose collective that is part of a network manager including Buttclub Hamburg. The Buttclub organizes meetings, lectures, concerts and other activities to scrape hair from the city that remains for me to explore.

6/Harald " Sack "Ziegler" Meine Oma "(Staubgold) Ziegler Harald Sack for short, is a veteran of the stage Cassette (Germany 80). It is defined as a techno-pop artist tend Dadaist and is famous for its concerts where he combines instruments and electronic children cheap. We met in Cologne in a memorable afternoon: an outdoor concert in a sort of private sculpture garden. This song was a favorite at the time of Eliott who spoke to him. A legend at hand, basically.

7/Donna Regina "Favourite Human" (Karaoke Kalk) Donna Regina comes from the stable Karaoke Kalk (a name that the footprint area of Kalk) who places his pawns on the chessboard of electro-pop music for a good ten years. Behind the name of Donna Regina, hides the duo Regina and Günther Janssen. Duo-couple who hesitate to talk about the joy of childbirth among other pleasures of life. I did not find any other info on them because the link on the site of Karaoke Kalk me land on the gate of the hotel Donna Regina in Naples (ah the mysteries of the internet). Take this song as a blow pop heart from this city so sweet.

8/Frank Heiss & Dr. Walker "To live and die in Cologne" (Liquid Sky Cologne) This title comes as a noisy and disturbing conclusion of our little meeting. This piece is from the compilation The Sound of Liquid Sky Cologne that I bought in 1997, well before discovering this city. At that time, something I was fascinated in the project of Dr. Walker: Create a "listening club", a club where you will not dance but listen. The rooms are inspired to listen, including this project. Thank you to you ...
