Listening Room # 9: P & O - Pop & Oriental - Tracklisting

Listening Room Series # 9: imaginary territories

P & O - Pop and Oriental: The fascination of the Orient in pop music

Thank you very much for being here with us tonight for the ninth listening room. We are inaugurating a new series. Imaginary lands is the appellation of origin uncontrolled music zones blurred. Tonight we talk back and forth between East and West, pop label.
A mixture of borrowings, homage, under cover of exotic (or looking the other), mapping a kind of non-place: lost in translation as travel within the country ... Other
Thanks to Ingrid for his support and to Francis for his participation in the mix tonight. Unlike last time where our pieces fit together into each other, we wanted to respect the borders (speaking of imaginary lands).
Thanks also to Geoff for hosting us in his place (so mirror the theme of tonight).

P & O: tracklisting
Part of Axel
Yannick Dauby : TW 04-05: Soundscapes Taiwan; underground alleys of Taipei; acoustic traces of over-activity urban soundscapes of places encountered (and speaks the record of this CD released ERE on the label). Asa Chang &
Junray: Toremoro: Asa-Chang is a self-taught master of the tabla. Junray is the name of the hardware it uses. Based in Tokyo, he performs a unique blend of poetry metronomic background sitar. A master of the exotic Leaf signed on the label (see below comments of François). Killer Bong
: TokyoDub: mysterious artist signed to the label PowerShovelAudio presents artists like the future of the Tokyo Underground. The site is fairly terse. TokyoDub pretty much sums up the idea of a territory imagianire.
Riow Arai: Disturbance: An abstract hip hop producer in the heart of Tokyo, influenced by Chicago post-rock and electronica German: the temptation is too great. This artist is trying, too, to blur the line and that's why you hear tonight. Another signature of the Leaf label.
Lippok Robert & Barbara Morgenstern: Kaitisburi: Berlin is the capital of electronic music and Barbara Morgenstern is an ambassador of choice, along with Ellen Alien. Here she joins Robert Lippok for a disk of (al-) chemistry sound. Two pieces of TESRI (the name of the album) are sung by some Mieko ShimizoCe disc was released on Berlin label Monika Enterprise. The whole theme of our evening is condensed in this kind of collaboration. The duo is he looking for a touch of exoticism? Mieko he brought one of his trips to Japan? Many are those who play the game from the East to the east of the East ...
Arovane featuring Kazumi: Pink Lilies: Uwe aka Zhan Arovane is a German artist who offers an electronic music that blends smoothly with the regular rhythm machines. One of the spearheads of the label City Centre Offices. Here he appeals to the charms of voice Kazumi. . The remark made for Lippok / Morgernstern remains valid ...
SPK: With love from China: SPK (for Socialistische Patienten Kollektiv) is an industrial group of the 80s. Led by Graeme Revell (who is now a successful composer of film scores for Hollywood), this group has negotiated a turn pop collaboration by allying to itself the beautiful Sinan (sort of Asian Grace Jones). This song is taken from Machine Age Voodoo whose cover is any impression of modernism post-revolutionary (Graeme and Sinan are dressed by Comme des Garcons). A piece of history in fact appeared on the Elektra label.
Music From China: Jie Xing: Chinese orchestra that is based in New York. What next carry on its traditions when we saw them from afar? China these musicians is it not also an imaginary territory? A new way to participate

For the future, I would launch a new mode of participation in the listening room. I am so very close, the titles of three specific labels: Leaf, City Centre-Offices and Staubgold. The idea is to help in the acquisition of these catalogs. For the next room listening, it will be possible to make contact with me and instead of contributing financially, you can order a specific CD. The person enjoys the CD until the evening of the chamber Listening to it brings by way of participation. The advantage is threefold:
You contribute to building a collection,
You learn a hard few weeks, you realize
economy (a CD is cheaper over the internet). About Blog

House # 8: The 2006 school year Horrorama

Horrorama!

A Dark Halloween Mix by Spooky Space (40 min. Approx.) - House # 8
listening
The horror cinema, soundtracks and atmospheres that characterize it, are a recurring influence of electronic music current, from techno to hip-hop. Schematically, we can identify three main sources of inspiration: the synthetic minimalist music of John Carpenter, whose precursor "Assault on Precinct 13" (1976) is considered one of the major sources of electro by many musicians (Laurent Garnier, Air, Terranova, Richard X, ...), music by Bernard Hermann for "Psycho," with its violins sometimes atmospheric and sometimes jerky, and finally the mixture of electronic and progrock group Goblin, who signed most of the soundtracks for Dario Argento in the years 1970 and 1980 (Profondo Rosso, Tenebrae, ...).

The mix will keep venturing into the landscape of music influenced by the aesthetics of horror films, while going back to their sources of inspiration. So close your eyes, hold on to your neighbor (e), it will start ...

1. Xploding Plastix: Pretend You Owe Me Nothing (Palm Beats 2002)
piece drawing on cinematic atmosphere of Bernard Hermann, with his soaring violins threatening.

2. John Carpenter: Assaul on Precinct 13 (Main Title) (Record Makers, 1976)
Boxes paced minimalist synth sounds dirty, dark atmosphere, this piece is a reference for many musicians cult electronica and hip-hop today. Sampled on numerous occasions (Afrika Bambaataa, Bom the Bass, Terranova, ...). Carpenter said to have directly inspired the style of Bernard Hermann efficient.

3. Delia Gonzales & Gavin Russom: 13 Moons (Edit) (DFA 2005)
hypnothiques designing their long pieces as soundtracks, Delia Gonzales & Gavin Russom claim inspiration from Italian horror films, and it receives the mark in the music of Goblin like John Carpenter.

4. DJ Wally: My Bloody Valentine (Mo Wax, 1996)
The abstract hip-hop DJ Wally pays homage to horror movies: very haunting piano Carpenter, screaming and disturbing ...

5. DJ Cam: Candyman (Columbia, 2000)
to sample elements of the film "Candyman", DJ Cam installs its voodoo atmosphere while using line sinister piano John Carpenter (again ...). Do not say three times "Candyman" in front of a mirror ...

6. Amon Tobin: Theme from Battery (Ninja Tune, 2005) This piece
climate dark is from the album Chaos Theory, which was designed by Amon Tobin himself, as the imaginary soundtrack to a film by Dario Argento 70s.
7. Broadway Project: Beauty (Memphis Industries, 2003)
The "beauty" for Broadway Project is proving quite disturbing mixture of strange and wonderful. Beauty combines psychedelic rock (it is close to Goblin), crackling vinyl, ghostly voices and traditional instruments.

8. Harmonic 33: Marionette (Warp, 2005)
Harmonic 33 is engaged in the exercise of the now classic "imaginary soundtrack" on the album Music for Film, Television And Radio Volume 1. Here he explores gothic atmospheres, drawn by a child piano melody.

9. M83: Car Chase Terror! (Labels, 2005) The French group M83
marries his horrific postrock space climates, inviting about this piece an American actress to interpret a scary imaginary scene ...

10. Goblin: Profondo Rosso (Cinevox, 1975)
Italian Group has signed numerous soundtracks for Dario Argento or George A. Romero (zombies). Their music is at the confluence of progrock, jazz and electronic music. It remains an influence today often claimed.

11. John Carpenter: Halloween (Main Title) (Varese Sarabande, 1978)
The classic! Minimalism and efficiency. It has not aged a bit ... You'll hear

also fragments from Halloween, When a Stranger Calls, Candyman, Scream, Nightmare on Elm Street, Chuky ...

Spanish Moss Sterilize For Crafts

The back is already more or less behind us. Before you anounce the events, I would like to thank all those who came to the last room listening (A) classical: a tribute to the iconoclastic classical and contemporary music. The evening was a success.
Extensions:
  • I'm going to listen when Gustav Klinkende Munt and it was not bad at all, nothing more.
  • Cologne: the program has been respected (even more) to eight (four children). Wonderful Weekend.
  • CitySonics and 10Days off: we do not go to these events. No time.

Back to school (my children and myself) kept me from putting feet on the bed listening to Music and Politics devoted to municipal elections of October 8th. This is only a postponement, we will schedule for the 2007 legislative elections. So many vote Oct. 8.

Come to the next room listening October 28, 2006. More details in a few days.

Sincerely, Axel
