Listening Room # 16

Soundclash and Propaganda between Music & Politics

A chamber listening / host table proposed by Axel Pleeck and François Dubuisson (and TARTISAN) to Congress June 17, 2009

listening room # 16 Soundclash and propaganda between music and politics (serial para / / ELE)

stopped again at the station for the rooms of Congress to listen! Full post-election fever, a large twenty citizens gather around a glass, a playlist argued and a table of guests. Thank you to them, then you (since it's really you that is). I would first like to thank Francis, who has agreed to provide such programming with me (you will see below that our approaches are complementary). A big thank you to Liv Quackels who made the beautiful graphic listening room. Discreet but very effective and attentive, she listened to my wishes and has brought to graphics: let me send you soon a link to its site.
Thanks also to Congress (especially Arnaud and Henri) for hosting us tonight in the beautiful premises of this cultural station.
Thanks also to Ingrid for her support ...

Introducing

Beyond the dispute between the parties which could be (at times) drunk, I would like to place the debate tonight (between music and politics, between us) under the sign of emancipation. That may be the only word to remember as it overlooks the debates. I would like to develop empowerment "as an experience of freedom to many" (I borrow this phrase from the philosopher Miguel Abensour in an article on his new book published in the Liberation of last Thursday). Two
book yet to be learned:
Emancipation of Jean-Louis Sagot-Duvauroux Editions La Dispute. This book read during my stay in Saint-Jean (hospital) shows clearly that the struggle for emancipation, even if it goes better with progressive parties, overlooks the debate. The Suffrage of Elvira
VS Naipaul Penguin. This book traces the arrival of the Policy Elvira Hill, the smallest of the nine counties of Trinidad. Harbans Surujpat wants the vote of Hindus, Muslims and blacks. She will have to seduce everyone. It's a great metaphor for politics. I saw that much this past month. Essential reading ...

Soundclash and propaganda between music and politics: tracklists

There will be two parties tonight. Do not panic viewing time request will not exceed 45-50 minutes (this is a must-room viewing). It begins with the lineup of Axel and it connects directly with that of Francis. Meet at 21:30 for buffet TARTISAN. If you have difficulty in monitoring the progress, look to the cabinets, indications cash will provide on the right path.

Party (e) Axel
You can vote in case of head or for a particular candidate.

1/Stange Parcels & Bim Sherman More is insane (On-U Sound)
in financial crisis (rapidly becoming economically), open debate on the so-called benefits of growth, full series of "business "that litter the social struggles, I wanted to start this evening by the song More is insane. At the helm, alchemists Strange Parcels the microphone and the legend of Dub Reggae, Bim Sherman. All this on the label of Adrian Sherwood. Arguably, the entire production of this fine team (at On-U Sound, was erected in the collective life philosophy) is political. Why always want more? The money, the sinews of war, the apple of discord between all parties. Reduction of taxes with a vengeance, rising wage-pocket ... the purpose of all this: we do consume. Our responsibility is to "stimulate" the economy. We do not want no part of this! Sustainable growth or decay? The debate is open.

2/Smith & Mighty No Justice (K7)
From Bristol, everybody knows Massive Attack and Tricky. Smith & Mighty are part of the same movement. This is the story of Rob Smith and Ray Mighty, two friends who will gather around them a certain wildlife trip-hop. No Justice is a bit of struggle: struggle against injustice and against a measure of justice "that is not made for us." The lyrics begin with a cry of despair: "The reason I say that life is hard is because the system is unfair. The system is unfair because it is not for us. " Rudy Lee, the guest vocalist, says in the notes: "No Justice is dedicated to all those who believe it possible the victory of good over evil and is inspired by my brother, Marlon Thomas, who is the survivor of a vicious racist attack that left her severely disabled. The struggle continues. "A piece of battle, it said ...

3/Foul Play Total Control (Moving Shadow)
This company total control scares. Following the death of Joe Van Holsbeek was passed laws to strengthen the surveillance camera was also developed partnerships between schools and the police officers may sponsor children (at the last Board School participation my children, there were two police officers who spoke proudly of the benefits of sponsorship: in short, a sponsored child is more police-friendly). Foul Play (and the label Moving Shadow) were part of the soft wing of the defunct Drum & Bass (the label has changed and the urban sounds now called Dubstep): a mixture of dry Drums and synth which the simulated world of interstellar peace.

4/Chumbawamba The Cutty Wren (Agit-Prop) Vs Growing Period Fancy (Rock Action Records)
A small battle (soundclash) between the very old (The Cutty Wren is from the album Rebel Songs 1381-1914 Français ) and the contemporary Growing (another reference growth?). I wanted to back to back these two pieces because for me, the election period is a fancy period ", a time when I can make my voice heard. At the time of The Cutty Wren (1381), the peasants had no such right. The song tells of the capture of Wren, a symbol for the king, which was then divided among the poor. The English history is full of struggles against unjust laws (see below piece of Autechre) and unfair taxes (the older ones here may remember the famous Poll Tax, the little baby Margaret.) For Chumbawamba The real story is that of the oppressed and before becoming superstars (they wrote the song of World Soccer 1998) they were on the label Agit-Prop (the acronym of Agitation and Propaganda Policy).

5/Autechre Lost (Warp) From the famous Anti
EP released in 1994, Autechre reacted in his own way (musically) to the bill, "Criminal Justice Bill," which follows the development of illegal rave parties, could prohibit any gathering 100 people or more (allowed or not) who were listening to repetitive music. Following this law, many artists would react. Autechre's response will be commensurate with the stakes. Consisting of 3 pieces including Both contain repetitive beats, the listener is warned that breaking the seal he accepts responsibility and risk of violating the new law. Autechre has also cleverly proposed a third piece which "has been programmed so that no action will contain identical beats and can be played to 33 or 45 laps under the new law. However we must warn the DJs that they must have a lawyer and a musicologist to confirm the non-repetitive nature of this music when police harassment. " The profits from this disc worship were given to Liberty (the National Council for Civil Liberties). At the bottom of the cover, we find this remark: Autechre is politically non-aligned. This is a question of personal freedom.

6/Salt Tank Gaza Strip (Internal)
In 1994, the duo of Stanners and Gates publishes ST4 Laguna Road on Internal label (the label that hosted the orbital period). Electronic music in the service of peace in the Near East, just after the visit of Barack Obama in the region? And Europe in all this? Why must we always procrastinate and leave the initiative to others? Finally, the important thing is that peace comes to find his way ...

7/Anat Russia Ben-David (Chicks On Speed Records)
Peace in the Middle East will obviously not do without the Jewish people. Here give the floor to the wing peaceful. Anat Ben-David is an artist who mixes pop and performance, all in the sauce policy. To account for its activities, it created the term Popaganda (also presented a show at the Tate Modern). As Laibach, she feels that the codes pop borrow from authoritarian discourse (Anat is also a citizen of NSK, the virtual state created by Laibach).
Listen to it: there is "a connection between the pop star and the fascist leader - how the audience enters the performance and let his emotions go with this person because she feels some support. "
The title of the album refers to the ubiquity of the Internet, mobile phones that make the hobby work ... (and vice versa).

8/Luke Sunday Vote (Village Green)
Pretext for the sixteenth Listening Room on Sunday to vote. The parties now talk of majorities. Us tonight, we discuss what we want. And now, to Francis.

Party (e) of Francis (aka Space Cookie)
You can vote at the top of the list or for a particular candidate.

"Noise is a political matter "(DJ Spooky)

It is obviously unrealistic to hope it was not touched by a select few titles a subject as vast and complex as the linkages between music and politics. The choice is necessarily frustrating (very) partial and biased. To observe a certain consistency and a common thread, the selection revolved mainly around the theme of political propaganda (state and media), its treatment and its withdrawal by various artists and musical projects.

1 / "American People Are the Last People to Wake Up" Project The Vinyl Collective
"The Vinyl Project Collective is a project subtitled "Spoken Word From The Archives" and proposing, together with a CD, a collection of political speeches and revolutionary activists. These sounds are designed to be "built by DJs, musicians, or any other person in their music." This is true in this extract criticizing the role of media and cultural industry in the passivity of the American people.

2 / "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" Gil Scott-Heron Gil Scott-Heron
is considered a precursor of rap (with the Last Poets, absent from this selection due to lack of space) and an artist is particularly involved in the movement for civil rights in the United States. "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," his most famous, denounces the influence of mass media in the United States.

3 / "Television The Drug Of The Nation" The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy
The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy is a hip-hop active in the early 90s and played by Michael Franti, who will continue his career with Spearhead . The song comes from proposed Hypocrisy Is the Greatest Luxury, their only real album, the radical political content (including a cover date of the provocative "California Über Alles "Dead Kennedys and" Music & Politics "of circumstance). It responds directly to the piece of Scott-Heron, noting that twenty years later the influence (negatively) the mainstream media has only increased.

4 / "Look Out Wax Wax
Audio Audio is a digital artist who develops Australian pieces composed predominantly of samples from flashes of information and political rhetoric, by the technique of" cut & paste ". Wax Audio denounces the war propaganda of the United States and Australia, in a trilogy entitled "Media Mashed EP (2003-2007), downloaded from their website: http://www.waxaudio.com.au/downloads . "Look Out" is excerpted from "Mediacracy," the second installment of the trilogy, and is diverted into the back of a spot urging Australian citizens to beware of terrorism and report any suspicious behavior.

5 / "Not in Our Name" Tariq Ali vs.. Asian Dub Foundation
Tariq Ali is a historian, writer and political commentator British of Pakistani origin, very involved in politics and international English. This piece consists of a speech he delivered in October 2002 in the context preparations for war against Iraq. He denounces the propaganda of Tony Blair, directed against popular movements opposed to the war: "It's a very big movement and That's Why Constantly One Of The Aims of The Blair Government IS propaganda: propaganda Against U.S. propaganda in Favour Of The war ". The speech was set to music by Asian Dub Foundation, a group blending dub, electronic music and political activism, for the purposes of compiling Peace Not War, coalition of artists against the war in Iraq.

6 / "Unparalleled Danger" Wax Audio Wax Audio
Here's how this himself this piece and the samples that comprise:
« Never has paranoid sensationalism and lowest common denominator entertainment-value sounded more disturbingly hilarious! Hear Commander-in-Chief George W Bush fail his elementary geo-political pop-quiz as Arnold Schwarzenegger leaps off the screen into the 2004 Republican national convention - as Hollywood & cable news media engage in an all out war for our attention. Are we living in a time of unparalleled danger ? You decide after hearing this summer's most electrifying mashing of blockbuster movie trailers vs news/war coverage ». MOVIE TRAILERS: Commando, Clear & Present Danger, Exorcist - The Beginning, Under Siege 2: Dark Territory, Die Hard 2, Team America - World Police, Collateral Damage, OTHER: Fox News, Bill O'Reilly, U.S. Marines in Iraq, Republican Party Campaign Advertisement 2004, Arnold Schwarzenegger Addressing Republican National Convention 2004, GWB with Andy Hiller 1999.

7 / "Needle-Stuck-On-Lebanon" Checkpoint 303 Checkpoint 303 is
a Palestinian group who chose to resist the Israeli occupation by means of electronic music. This song makes collages newsflashes condemns the Israeli bombardment of Lebanon in the summer of 2006, and the passivity of the "international community" in imposing a cease-fire.

8 / "Outro" DJ Day
This song is actually named "Intro", wording that could confuse the listener for a title ended this selection, it is renamed "Outro" for purposes of the case. He opens the EP by DJ Day "Got To Get It Right," which examines the state of the contemporary world. The piece starts on a wry note, collecting extracts JT and speeches stating the prevailing chaos and individualism on the planet, to end on a hopeful note - "A New Beginning" - and a call to civic engagement .

As extensions

A listening room is always followed by extensions. For reasons of health and overwork, I was not able to implement two of the four extensions of the previous listening room (Grand Central). I re-proposes this time. I also note that we will be Friday night at the music festival (the experimental Recyclart to be held in the church and the Chapel). Those who want to join us may occur during the host table.

A journey by train to Hasselt in the direction of the Z33 Gallery. This huge space dedicated to contemporary art is housed in a former Beguine. The place is beautiful. We went in December. A little lunch at the Villa Kakkelbont is also possible.
train ride followed by a tour by tram along the Vlaamse Kust, it's almost time for the triennial Beaufort: a journey as an artist along the coast where the big names of contemporary art offers works (often created for the site). I suggest you go together, now, to finish to break the ice. The event is this year in its third edition. Dates to be confirmed ...

Call for

Next winter, I shall inaugurate a new series . Entitled Arts & Plastics, it will aim pay tribute to artists. The Listening Room will be a sound development of the universe from a particular artist (themes, methods, settings, etc..) And will be followed by a mini-lecture on the artist. The conference will be carried out by ignorant master (as beautiful as Jacques Rancière): not an expert but an enthusiast.
I am committed to ensuring the first. In fact, I will give a lecture in November as part of the Young and Fine Arts (the cycle of afternoon classes). This conference on Rachel Whiteread, I rework it for listening rooms. It will be a True smaller conference with slides & co.
I look for someone who would be interested in preparing a mini-lecture on the painter Ellsworth Kelly.
I'm also looking for other ideas.

Ethics and statistics

listening rooms are made 100% free illegal downloads. The majority of music this evening are bought or rented at the library. Listening rooms do not generate any profit and are very time consuming for the organizers. The TECC (the fee for group listening and contextual) is used to fund various small expenses.
In 2008, I carefully recorded all my purchases and rentals of CD in a small Moleskine: I have spent 661.09 euros in music (not including CDs offered a way to manipulate the statistics). Per month, this gives 55.09 euros. Per day, 1.81 euros.
My commitment for 2009 is to reduce these costs 1 euro per day while maintaining the "quality" listening rooms. Curb consumption and revisit her nightclub ... Happy New Year.
NB: the Moleskine is available ...
June 2009: I'm on the right track towards decreasing. I do not buy many records. I will the countdown to the end of the year.

Talk about listening rooms around you and please come if you want ... participation

Thank you thank you Axel and Francis
