House # 8: The 2006 school year Horrorama

Horrorama!

A Dark Halloween Mix by Spooky Space (40 min. Approx.) - House # 8
listening
The horror cinema, soundtracks and atmospheres that characterize it, are a recurring influence of electronic music current, from techno to hip-hop. Schematically, we can identify three main sources of inspiration: the synthetic minimalist music of John Carpenter, whose precursor "Assault on Precinct 13" (1976) is considered one of the major sources of electro by many musicians (Laurent Garnier, Air, Terranova, Richard X, ...), music by Bernard Hermann for "Psycho," with its violins sometimes atmospheric and sometimes jerky, and finally the mixture of electronic and progrock group Goblin, who signed most of the soundtracks for Dario Argento in the years 1970 and 1980 (Profondo Rosso, Tenebrae, ...).

The mix will keep venturing into the landscape of music influenced by the aesthetics of horror films, while going back to their sources of inspiration. So close your eyes, hold on to your neighbor (e), it will start ...

1. Xploding Plastix: Pretend You Owe Me Nothing (Palm Beats 2002)
piece drawing on cinematic atmosphere of Bernard Hermann, with his soaring violins threatening.

2. John Carpenter: Assaul on Precinct 13 (Main Title) (Record Makers, 1976)
Boxes paced minimalist synth sounds dirty, dark atmosphere, this piece is a reference for many musicians cult electronica and hip-hop today. Sampled on numerous occasions (Afrika Bambaataa, Bom the Bass, Terranova, ...). Carpenter said to have directly inspired the style of Bernard Hermann efficient.

3. Delia Gonzales & Gavin Russom: 13 Moons (Edit) (DFA 2005)
hypnothiques designing their long pieces as soundtracks, Delia Gonzales & Gavin Russom claim inspiration from Italian horror films, and it receives the mark in the music of Goblin like John Carpenter.

4. DJ Wally: My Bloody Valentine (Mo Wax, 1996)
The abstract hip-hop DJ Wally pays homage to horror movies: very haunting piano Carpenter, screaming and disturbing ...

5. DJ Cam: Candyman (Columbia, 2000)
to sample elements of the film "Candyman", DJ Cam installs its voodoo atmosphere while using line sinister piano John Carpenter (again ...). Do not say three times "Candyman" in front of a mirror ...

6. Amon Tobin: Theme from Battery (Ninja Tune, 2005) This piece
climate dark is from the album Chaos Theory, which was designed by Amon Tobin himself, as the imaginary soundtrack to a film by Dario Argento 70s.
7. Broadway Project: Beauty (Memphis Industries, 2003)
The "beauty" for Broadway Project is proving quite disturbing mixture of strange and wonderful. Beauty combines psychedelic rock (it is close to Goblin), crackling vinyl, ghostly voices and traditional instruments.

8. Harmonic 33: Marionette (Warp, 2005)
Harmonic 33 is engaged in the exercise of the now classic "imaginary soundtrack" on the album Music for Film, Television And Radio Volume 1. Here he explores gothic atmospheres, drawn by a child piano melody.

9. M83: Car Chase Terror! (Labels, 2005) The French group M83
marries his horrific postrock space climates, inviting about this piece an American actress to interpret a scary imaginary scene ...

10. Goblin: Profondo Rosso (Cinevox, 1975)
Italian Group has signed numerous soundtracks for Dario Argento or George A. Romero (zombies). Their music is at the confluence of progrock, jazz and electronic music. It remains an influence today often claimed.

11. John Carpenter: Halloween (Main Title) (Varese Sarabande, 1978)
The classic! Minimalism and efficiency. It has not aged a bit ... You'll hear

also fragments from Halloween, When a Stranger Calls, Candyman, Scream, Nightmare on Elm Street, Chuky ...
