The Legendary Bang Bros Free Watch

Listening Room # 14: House Tracklisting

Get well! I wanted to thank you once again, for being here tonight. The train as a sound object and source of inspiration: if the train has these attributes because he participates in our imagination of a whole series of ways. I invite you to read the few lines that follow the tracklisting: these are tracks to prolong the moment. We leave for about fifty minutes of music. Then, the buffet put together by The TARTISAN. The photos are of Annick Ploughman, close collaborator of the Centre Scolaire Ma Campagne (where she teaches photography). She is present tonight and I thank her warmly. Arnaud thank you to Congress for his time, his enthusiasm and availability. Thank you to Henry for the cultural dimension of political engagement.
Thanks also to Ingrid for her support ...

Listening Room # 14: Tracklisting

Herbert Distel La Stazione (HatHut)
We talked to the station in Milan! Well Herbert Distel just takes us there with his song La Stazione. Train noises are mixed with no ads and speakers from the station. The sounds are recorded, then worked until it became unrecognizable. This work is an echo sound which refers to an opera of Mario Peragallo (The Hill) where certain personalities in the arts were celebrated. Herbert Distel is himself a sculptor and activist in the tradition of Fluxus. We have already listened to the fourth Distel Listening Room (dedicated to sound art) with his mythical Die Reise (travel by train between Bern and Zurich) but I could not resist the nod (listen to a station in La Stazione).

Steve Reich Different Trains (Black Box)
In this quartet for strings and recorder, Reich part of the human voice as a primer. On this basis, it will graft many childhood memories related to journeys he had to make between his divorced parents. Between his father and mother, trains, Virginia with the housekeeper. The other movements of this album explores the theme of the survivors of the Holocaust by mixing the different frames. This interpretation is the work of Duke Quartet. This piece is a proposal for François Dubuisson, who is not far ...

Stephen Vitiello Listening to Donald Judd (Sub Rosa)
Those who appreciate the artist (Donald Judd) know without doubt that he took possession of a place in Texas (Marfa) to create a space for its measurement. For its part, the composer Stephen Vitiello has installed in the vast warehouse, equipment to capture that, faute de mieux, be called the "spirit of place" (Guy Marc Hinant - Sub Rosa boss speaks of him " Sound capacity "). In Marfa, Vitiello said, the calm is interrupted only occasionally by the passing trains, "Somehow I was there to record The Elusive Marfa Light That Appears Almost nightly in the sky (...) Sounds Were Captured in and Around the Donald Judd installations at Chinati, in a glider, in fields of Grasshoppers and Along Some unknown street. "

Ulrich Schnauss Passing by (City Centre-Offices) Other
sound, another snapshot: the train that goes the distance. Nothing is known of him or her destination, or the melting pot it. And yet it makes us dream. It is also the train, passing, pace our lives.
Ulrich Schnauss is celebrated (and appreciated) for successfully blending rather unlikely between electronic music and pop music dark Anglo-Saxon.
This disc was released in 2001 on the label CCO who was one of our favorites. A long piece, which installs, little by little, an atmosphere of "large areas" crossed by a railroad (a nice phrase in itself).

Mouse On Mars Omnibuzz (Too Pure)
In 1995, Mouse On Mars (the duo of Andi Toma and Jan St. Werner) finished (re) place on the world map Cologne Electro (following in the footsteps of the late Stockhausen). Album IAOR Tahiti, which celebrates the deterritorialization has its way, the duo has Omnibuzz: nice portmanteau word that condenses the tranquil rhythm of the train "which stops everywhere" and the buzz, this little noise made about him.

Maas Eurostar (Soma) Soma
is a little label that put Glasgow on the world Techno. The city has a really special atmosphere with the architecture of Charles Rennie Macintosh and his little orange metro which loops around the city (and the people nicknamed the "clockwork orange"). The North (of England) has a soul. Ewan Pearson tackles him to the mythical Eurostar, the train that reduces the distances between major European cities. With distance, you lose more and more "time" of travel and change of territory. Eurostar, with its phones phones that interferes with reading, with its Wi-Fi which sabotages our neurons. The station becomes a shopping center and crossing the border is reminiscent of 9 / 11 (nine / eleven). Sometimes we come to prefer his train P (for rush hour) to Dendermonde, because it stops at the station Bockstael ...

Chris Watson Ouleja Mine (Touch) This former member of
very influence Cabaret Voltaire (Sheffield 80s) became a master at capturing sounds on the ground. Here we are in Mexico, or rather, in a city abandoned train station in the outskirts of Mexico City, April 13, 2005. We Watson Calls to push the button "pause and listen to the beat of diesel and tones of powder blue that disappear into the canyon."

Telepopmuzik Last Train To Whenever (Catalog)
Not so long ago, Bristol redistributed cards pop music invented trip-hop music that cleverly mixed codes and proposed a music often slow, always hypnotic. The movement was soon to be small outside the borders of the English seaside town. Telepopmuzik is the French response to Massive Attack and Tricky other. This piece was chosen for its title borrowed from mythology "last train that goes nowhere."

Lee 'Scratch' Perry & Dub Syndicate Train to Doomsville (On-U Sound)
On the mythical label of Adrian Sherwood, Pope of the echo (and true alchemist in the studio) meeting of the apostles dub music for a song that begins with the start of a train to hell. All of the imaginary voyage is contained in the metallic noises of a journey that Lee says "no return".

Terrestrial Tones Future Train (Paw Tracks)
Here a piece of rather abstract. The rhythmic steam engine moved slowly. The train of the future is here. We used to travel 300 km per hour. Eric Copeland (of Black Dice - a combo American neo-noise) and Dave Portner (Animal Collective - Another American neo-folk combo) gently we dismantle this myth there. Their train of the future leaves a taste of madness in my head.

Neven BXL Central (Different)
Neven is a mythical band of Belgium. We often spoke of them as the first group "trip-hop" of our small country. They participated in the "Brussels is ours" (ceremonies Brussels 2000), which is as a kind of auditory memory of Brussels. Brussels Central is for us a way to come home. Thank you to my friend Yves Cardoen for offering me this song.

Small mythology of the object train

As a postscript to our evening a little justification of my choice to treat the train like an object. I rely here on the text of Roland Barthes Myth Today in which he defines myth as "a word". Based on this observation, he adds: "We hear so here, now, by language, speech, speech, etc.. Any unit or any meaningful synthesis, whether verbal or visual: a photograph will speak to us just as a newspaper article, the objects themselves will become speech, if they mean something ... "
The train is an object when it becomes a word. The "train" is itself a bundle of stories that start all alone in our minds, provided that the incentive to go in that direction.
With you, tonight I tried to explore some of the myths associated with the object train. Here are exposed jumble some of these myths:
station as separation zone between two lovers (see the beautiful British film Brief Encounter)
The sub-area as an accelerator of desire (not to mention the sleeper train or cama coche-English)
train elsewhere as a synonym
train as his (in all its materiality)
The driverless train as metaphor a society that does not know where she will train
as a link between areas cut off from the world
train as a marker of social distinctions (the first and second class, the ticket business in new high speed trains) The
train like conquering the wilderness (the conquest of the West) as
train daily rhythm / lethal (metro-boulot-dodo)
train late as universal excuse
The dichotomy between express bus and train
mythical (the Orient Express passes at home in March, you can climb aboard for some 3000 euros)
service within and international relations (such as ministries)
be "on track" as a synonym for determinism

"It is that myth is a word stolen and returned. Only the word that it relates is no longer quite that which was stolen: in this respect, we did not exactly put in its place. "As

extensions

A listening room is always followed by extensions. Nothing like a little cultural outing to finish the conversation started here tonight. Four proposals for activities that combine art and train. For each activity, an email will be sent to all participants of the listening room. An appointment will be made and we will go (even two!)

A journey by train to Hasselt in the direction of the Z33 Gallery. This huge space dedicated to contemporary art is housed in a former Beguine. The place is beautiful. We went in December. A little lunch at the Villa Kakkelbont is also possible.

Ethics and statistics

listening rooms are made 100% free illegal downloads. The majority of music this evening are bought or rented at the library. Listening rooms do not generate any profit and are very time consuming for the organizers. The TECC (the fee for group listening and contextual) is used to fund various small expenses.
In 2008, I carefully recorded all my purchases and rentals of CD in a small Moleskine: I have 661.09 euros spent in music (not including CDs offered a way to manipulate the statistics). Per month, this gives 55.09 euros. Per day, 1.81 euros.
My commitment for 2009 is to reduce these costs 1 euro per day while maintaining the "quality" listening rooms. Curb consumption and revisit her nightclub ... Happy New Year.
NB: the Moleskine is available ...
